THE STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC ...
Global Disc Records president Jonathan Platt, describes his motivation for getting involved with the film "Mr. Jealousy":
Global Disc's mission in regards to working on film soundtracks is to bring small independent companies with common goals together. "It's a case of the little guys teaming up against the big" says Global Disc's Business Affairs Executive Tonya Butler. "Our company has produced Gold and Platinum soundtracks in Hong-Kong and Japan" says Butler, "but this project was our introduction into the American Soundtrack market. Its quite a different animal but we were up to the challenge".
Although many film soundtracks have a score of horror stories attached, Global Disc was fortunate enough to work with Noah Baumbach, a music oriented director an eclectic taste.
- MOVIE REVIEW -
a JOEL CASTLEBERG production
Other Americans have tried to emulate Francois Truffaut, particularly his triumphant "Jules et Jim". Almost nobody succeeds, but "Mr. Jealousy" is the rare exception. Writer-director Noah Baumbach tracks a yearlong deception in the life of his hero, Lester (Eric Stoltz), who is so painfully jealous over his new love (Annabella Sciorra) that he infiltrates a therapy group under an assumed name in order to spy on the most handsome, most famous of her former flames (Chris Eigeman). The sitcombaiting farcicality of this premise is brought off with surprising gentility: Lester is simply trapped by a small, seemingly harmless lie that builds and builds until it has so taken over his life that nothing short of a disaster will freehim. Stoltz makes the most of this, his best role in years - he keeps this lunacy truthful. So does the rest of the wonderful ensemble cast, which includes Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Carlos Jacott and (in a dry, charming cameo) Peter Bogdanovich as the therapist. Baumbach "Kicking and Screaming") steals a bit of music from "Jules et Jim", but he's no copycat; he's Truffaut's natural kin, a people watcher who on his own unique terms chronicles love, dancing to the music of time.
